Obverse

The obverse design of the 1873-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Inspired by Christian Gobrechts design on other US Eagle denominations, this version depicts Liberty with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars around the edge.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin displays an ornate version of the Great Seal of the United States. It shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. The national motto is inscribed above the eagles head within a ring of 13 stars.

History

James B. Longacre designed the Liberty Gold Double Eagle in 1849. Longacre’s designs, particularly the Indian Head cent and the Liberty Head double eagle, became iconic in American coinage and are highly sought after by collectors today. His work significantly influenced the aesthetic direction of American coins in the mid-to-late 19th century.
