Product Description

The Morgan Silver Dollar remains one of the most recognizable and widely collected coins in United States numismatics. The series was struck by the United States Mint from 1878 until 1904, with a final year of production in 1921. These coins were produced during a time when silver mining in the western United States was expanding rapidly. The 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar offered here comes from the second year of the series and includes a capped die issue affecting the mint mark. Certified examples of the 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar are currently available from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual plastic slab!
  • 2nd year of release for Morgan Dollars!
  • Declared mintage of only 756,000 coins at Carson City!
  • Contains .7734 troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the US government.
  • Graded Fine 12 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Capped Die error.
  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features the heraldic eagle.
  • Original images by George T. Morgan.
  • CC mint mark from the Carson City Mint.

All coins available here are graded Fine 12. Coins in this condition still show the primary details of the design, but moderate wear is visible across the surfaces. Some finer features may be faded, and parts of the lettering may show wear. Approximately one-third of all 1879-CC Morgan Dollars display the Capped Die issue that affects the mint mark. This die error created raised metal around the CC mint mark, which gives the letters a slightly blurred look that appears as though one CC sits on top of another.

Obverse

For the obverse of the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, Liberty is shown in a left-facing portrait. Instead of using a purely symbolic figure, the design represents Liberty with the features of an American woman. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created this portrait and used Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, as the inspiration for Libertys appearance.

Reverse

In the reverse design of 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollars, the coin presents the American bald eagle with wings stretched outward and its chest facing the viewer. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. These traditional symbols represent the countrys commitment to peace while also acknowledging the importance of strength and defense.

History

The Carson City Mint in Nevada produced the 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar, and coins from this location are often among the most sought-after in the entire series. Only 756,000 coins were struck at Carson City in 1879, making it one of the smaller mintages of the period. Many collectors value these pieces because the Carson City Mint operated during the height of the silver boom in the American West, and the CC mint mark has become closely connected with that historic era.
