Obverse

For the obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, we find Lady Liberty in a portrait. Facing left, Ms. Liberty looks calm and dignified as she wears a crown of wheat and a Phrygian cap. Obverse inscriptions include the year of mintage and the motto E Pluribus Unum.

Reverse

For the reverse of 1881 Morgan Silver Dollars an American eagle is featured. George T. Morgan also designed this image, which features the eagle looking left as it holds arrows and an olive branch. Surrounding this majestic bird are decorative laurels whose ends are tied by a ribbon.

History

After being struck between 1878 and 1904, the Morgan Silver Dollar disappeared for nearly two decades. Then, under the conditions of the 1918 Pittman Act, the coin was once again produced in 1921. This was also the only time the Denver Mint struck this coin. That same year, the Peace Dollar design was introduced, ushering in a new era for American silver dollars.
