Obverse

On the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, we find Lady Liberty in portrait. This left-profile effigy was designed by George T. Morgan, who used Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Williams as a model. Morgans desire to have Ms. Liberty appear as an American woman was considered a departure from previous Greek-inspired designs.

Reverse

The reverse of 1882 Morgan Silver Dollars presents Americas national bird, the majestic bald eagle. A symbol of America and her values, the eagle is shown here with open wings as it carries arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Surrounding the bird is a pair of decorative laurels.

History

In 1876, George T. Morgan arrived in the U.S. from England after years of work as a die engraver. Working under William Barber, Morgan designed Americas new silver dollar, which went into production following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878. Known today as the Morgan Silver Dollar, this coin is considered one of the most collected designs in U.S. history.
