Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint represent a unique chapter in American coinage, with roots going back to the California Gold Rush. That historic moment began in 1848 with James Marshalls discovery at Sutters Mill, and it shaped much of the gold production on the West Coast. Just a few years later, the San Francisco Mint began issuing these coins. BGASC now carries 1882-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins.

Obverse
On the obverse of the 1882-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty by James B. Longacre. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed with her name, and 13 stars surround the image to represent the founding colonies.
Reverse
The reverse carries the Great Seal of the United States. This Type III design shows an eagle with spread wings, holding arrows and an olive branch. The shield of the nation rests on its chest, and inscriptions include IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination written as TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
San Francisco-minted Double Eagles often used gold freshly extracted from nearby mines, especially in the 19th century. These coins carry a stronger historical link to the Gold Rush era than those produced at other US mints. The gold used often went directly from mine to mint, preserving a part of that regional legacy.
