Product Description

In 1884, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle was struck at two different mints with very different outputs. While the San Francisco Mint released over 900,000 of these coins, the Carson City Mint produced a much smaller numberjust 81,139. As a result, the 1884-CC release is the scarcer of the two and a standout among 19th-century gold coins. BGASC now offers the 1884-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Coins arrive in protective plastic slabs!
  • 35th coin in the Double Eagle Series!
  • Final mintage of 81,139 coins at Carson City!
  • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Issued a face value of $20 (USD) by the United States.
  • About Uncirculated 55.
  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Type III reverse visuals.
  • Designed by James B. Longacre.
  • Comes with a CC mint mark from Carson City.

These 1884-CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins come graded as About Uncirculated 55. AU55 coins show very light wear and retain most of their original mint luster, offering a nice visual appearance for collectors.

Obverse

The obverse design on the 1884-CC Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin shows Lady Liberty in a left-facing profile. Created by James B. Longacre, this image includes Liberty with detailed curls and a coronet that reads Liberty. Around her are thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.

Reverse

The reverse side carries the Great Seal of the United States. This artwork includes a bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. Because this is a Type III version, it features the motto In God We Trust above the eagle and a revised denomination display.

History

Carson Citys mintage of Double Eagle coins occurred from 1870 to 1893, with several gaps in production. Located near Nevadas Comstock Lode, the mint processed precious metals mined from the region and contributed to the coinage of many historic issues like this one.
