Obverse

The obverse design on the 1884-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle was created by James B. Longacre. It shows a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair styled in curls with a coronet on her head. A border of 13 stars surrounds the portrait to represent the founding colonies.

Reverse

The reverse includes the Great Seal of the United States, a design first used in this series in the 19th century. It features a bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch with a shield in front. This Type III design version includes the motto and a modified denomination layout.

History

During 1884, economic conditions in the U.S. were stable, and the output at each mint reflected its role in handling regional commerce and gold reserves. San Franciscos large production numbers show its importance in the national coinage system.
