Product Description

The Morgan Silver Dollar, introduced in 1878, stands as a hallmark of American coinage. Designed by George T. Morgan, this silver dollar marked the return of large silver coin production after a five-year break, replacing the Seated Liberty Dollar. The Morgan Dollar was struck every year from 1878 to 1904, with one final issue in 1921. Right now, 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available in perfect condition at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Arrives inside a protective plastic slab!
  • 8th release of Morgan Silver Dollars!
  • Declared mintage of 9,185,000 coins at New Orleans!
  • Limited availability of certified coins!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a Grade of Mint State 66 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • The obverse features Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse is a depiction of the American bald eagle.
  • Comes with an O mint mark from the New Orleans Mint.

Each 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar is encased in a plastic slab to protect its Mint State 66 grade. Coins in this condition show above-average luster with only a few small contact marks and light scuffs visible under magnification.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Coin features Lady Liberty. This design by George T. Morgan depicts Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. The 13 stars around her symbolize the original colonies.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar showcases Morgans heraldic eagle design. This bald eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The absence of a shield and the O mint mark below the eagle identify the coin as a product of the New Orleans Mint.

History

During 1885, Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at four different U.S. Mints. The Philadelphia Mint produced the most coins, with more than 17.7 million specimens. The New Orleans Mint followed with 9.185 million coins, while San Francisco and Carson City issued significantly fewer coins.
