The captivating obverse design of the 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar showcases a left-profile bust of Liberty. Meticulously crafted by the talented George T. Morgan, this rendition features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap accentuated by a coronet crown and a resplendent laurel wreath delicately adorning her hair.
Shifting our gaze to the reverse side, we encounter the captivating heraldic eagle. Another masterpiece by Morgan, this striking portrayal presents a majestic bald eagle facing forward, with wings outstretched wide, clutching the arrows symbolizing war and the olive branch signifying peace.
In 1889, the Morgan Silver Dollars were issued by four branches of the United States Mint. The Philadelphia Mint and New Orleans Mint played a significant role, with the Philadelphia Mint striking an impressive 21.726 million coins, accounting for nearly half of the total volume of Morgan Dollars that year. New Orleans issued the next highest volume in 1889 at 11.875 million coins.
