Product Description

The San Francisco Mint was established in 1854 to meet the demands of the Gold Rush. Before then, miners had to send their gold far away to be coined, which was costly and dangerous. The new mint in the West offered a local option and began producing Liberty Double Eagles right away. These large denomination coins supported economic activity in the Western U.S. Right now, 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside an individual protective flip!
  • 42nd release of Liberty Double Eagles!
  • Final mintage of 1,288,125 coins at San Francisco!
  • Extremely Fine specimens!
  • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Issued a face value of $20 (USD) by the United States.
  • Obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse includes the Great Seal of the United States.

These 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are offered in Extremely Fine condition and arrive in plastic flips. XF coins have light wear on the higher parts of the image and may still show traces of original shine. They usually fall within the 40-45 range on the Sheldon grading scale.

Obverse

The front of the 1891-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle shows Lady Liberty looking to the left. James B. Longacre designed this image, which features Liberty wearing a coronet marked with the word Liberty. There are 13 stars around her, one for each original U.S. colony.

Reverse

On the back, the 1891-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle displays the national Great Seal. Created by Longacre as well, this reverse shows an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. The Type III design includes the national motto added in 1866 and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS updated in 1877.

History

Liberty Double Eagles struck in San Francisco were useful for large trades and payments in a rapidly growing part of the country. Their production numbers often reflect how the Western economy was performing during key moments in U.S. history.
