Product Description

The Morgan Silver Dollar remains one of the most recognizable silver coins in US Mint history. First struck in 1878, the design was created by George T. Morgan, who was then the Assistant Engraver at the Mint. This release marked the revival of the silver dollar after several years without production. Today, certified 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual plastic slab!
  • 16th issue of Morgan Silver Dollars!
  • Final mintage of 378,000 coins at Philadelphia!
  • Limited availability of certified coins!
  • Contains .7734 troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Graded Mint State 62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • On the obverse is a bust of Liberty.
  • The reverse features the heraldic eagle.

Each 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin available here has been certified MS62 by PCGS. In this grade, coins show muted or uneven luster and light marks across the fields and design. A few of these contact marks may appear in focal spots, though the coin remains appealing overall.

Obverse

The obverse displays George T. Morgans image of Liberty. Facing left, she wears a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Around her portrait are 13 stars representing the original colonies.

Reverse

The reverse highlights Morgans heraldic eagle design. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace, and appears without the national shield seen in other American eagle motifs.

History

Economic strain and political change heavily impacted Morgan Dollar production in 1893. That years Panic of 1893 and the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act led to lower silver demand and smaller mint runs. Philadelphia issued roughly 378,000 coins, with smaller totals from New Orleans and San Francisco. The Carson City 1893-CC would be the final Morgan Dollar from that branch, ending its run with 677,000 coins.
