Reverse

This design portrays the bald eagle in front-facing relief, spreading its wings and holding the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Notably, this design does not include a US national shield.

History

Established in 1838, the New Orleans Mint was one of the three branch mints built to expand the nation’s coinage capacity. While it closed during the Civil War and remained inactive throughout the Reconstruction Era, it reopened its doors in 1879.
