In 1878, the United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar Series with brand-new designs by George T. Morgan. This series marked the return of silver dollars after a pause in production. Morgans fresh take on Liberty and the bald eagle helped give the coin lasting popularity. Issued annually from 1878 to 1904, and once more in 1921, the Morgan Dollar is a collector favorite. Obverse

The obverse of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar features the familiar Liberty portrait. Liberty is depicted in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, with a coronet inscribed with “Liberty.” Thirteen stars circle the image to honor the original colonies.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar highlights the heraldic eagle design. The eagle is shown with raised wings, facing forward. In its talons, it holds arrows representing strength and an olive branch standing for peace. A wreath surrounds the eagle, and the national motto appears above.

George T. Morgan brought new skills to the U.S. Mint with his sharp eye for portrait art and precision. He was known for preparing his designs with detailed drawings and models before committing them to steel dies, setting a high bar for future coin artists.
