Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1916-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle, you’ll find a left-profile bust of a tribal figure. This indigenous figure wears a tribal headdress and is struck incuse into the coin’s surface, a pioneering feature among American coins.
Reverse
Flipping the coin to its reverse side, you’ll encounter the majestic American bald eagle. The eagle is depicted with its wings folded at its side while perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf is wrapped in an olive branch, symbolizing the balance between war and peace.
History
The story of Indian Gold Half Eagles began in 1908 when the United States Mint first introduced them. Despite being available for only ten different years, these coins were minted by four different branches of the US Mint. Notably, the 1909-O issue was exclusively produced by the New Orleans Mint.
The 1916 Indian Half Eagle holds a unique place in history as it marked the final release before a significant hiatus. During World War I, gold coin production by the US Mint was suspended. In 1916, only the San Francisco Mint struck these coins, with a total release of just 240,000 pieces.
