Obverse

On the obverse, the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Coin features a standing image of Lady Liberty. She holds a torch in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment, and a scroll in her left, representing knowledge and governance. The dual dates 1776 and 1926 commemorate the anniversary of American independence.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin features Independence Hall, an iconic structure in Philadelphia that served as a meeting place for the Second Continental Congress and later the Constitutional Convention. It was in this building that the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed, making it a cornerstone of American democracy.

History

In 1926, celebrations for the Sesquicentennial took place across the United States, with Philadelphia as the centerpiece of the festivities. The city invested heavily in restoring historic landmarks, including Independence Hall. John R. Sinnock, who became the 7th Chief Engraver of the US Mint in 1925, was tasked with designing a commemorative coin that captured the essence of the nations history and heritage.
