In late 1921, the United States Mint introduced the Peace Dollar as the successor to the Morgan Dollar. This release signaled the nations return to silver dollar production after the conclusion of World War I. It also marked the last major silver dollar issued for general circulation. The reverse of the coin shows an American bald eagle resting on a rock. With an olive branch in its talons and the sun rising in the background, this image represents the nations hope for peace in a post-war world.

History

The design features a radiant crown on Libertys head, a symbol of peace and renewal after the devastation of war. Anthony de Franciscis design was selected through a national competition that included entries from artists such as Adolph Weinman and Hermon MacNeil.
