The Peace Silver Dollar was the last 90% silver dollar to be widely used in the U.S. First issued in 1921 and designed by Anthony de Francisci, this coin was a symbol of Americas desire for peace after World War I. Obverse

The obverse of the 1934 Peace Dollar includes a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. Her hair flows freely, and she wears a crown of rays. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST features a Latin-style spelling of TRUST as TRVST, which is part of de Franciscis original design.

Reverse

On the reverse of the coin is a bald eagle, which is shown resting on a rocky perch. With its wings folded and an olive branch in its talons, the eagle looks toward the sunrise. This calm and hopeful scene supports the peace message that the coin was meant to carry.

History

The Peace Dollar came about thanks to the Pittman Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to replace silver dollars that were melted down during the war. Anthony de Francisci designed this coin to mark a new era of peace. Its the only U.S. coin intended specifically to commemorate the end of a war.
