The Peace Silver Dollar marked the last circulating silver dollar design from the United States Mint. Released in 1921 and designed by Anthony de Francisci, this series was struck during ten production years from 1921 through 1928, then again in 1934 and 1935. The obverse of the 1935-S Peace Dollar displays Liberty in profile, facing left. Her flowing hair and the radiant crown she wears give the image a sense of movement and light. De Francisci reportedly used his wife as a model when designing this version of Liberty.

Reverse

On the reverse of the coin, a bald eagle is shown resting on a rock, holding an olive branch in its talons. The eagle looks to the horizon, where the sun is rising. This peaceful image reflects the message behind the coins name and design.

History

Over the course of the Peace Dollars production, the eagle design was updated. The 1921 release had a high-relief strike with more pronounced detail. However, in 1922, the Mint lowered the relief to help with striking efficiency. This made the design a bit softer, but the symbolism remained clearan emblem of hope following a time of war.
