History

The U.S. began planning for its Bicentennial coin program as far back as 1971. By 1973, a contest was in place, allowing artists to re-design the reverse of the Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half-Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. For the Kennedy release, artwork by Seth Huntington featuring Independence Hall was selected. Bicentennial coins were minted between 1975 and 1976, with all coins bearing the dual date of 1776-1976.
