History

The San Francisco Mint took the lead in issuing American Silver Eagles in 1986, producing both the BU Silver Eagle and Proof Silver Eagle. San Francisco continued to strike the BU Silver Eagle until 1998 and the Proof Silver Eagle until 1992. Although the West Point Mint now bears the primary responsibility for both BU and Proof Silver Eagles, as of 2018, San Francisco has provided supplemental coining to boost mintage numbers.
