Each 1988 1/4 oz Australian Platinum Koala Coin is shipped in an individual flip. The Platinum Koala Series launched in 1988 and became one of the earliest platinum bullion programs introduced by a modern industrialized nation. At the time of its debut, the Perth Mint issued the series in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. All four sizes remained available throughout the programs full run, which ended in 2000.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1988 Australian Platinum Koala features Queen Elizabeth II in profile. Also present on the obverse are the coins face value and inscriptions noting Australia as the nation of issue. This portrait is the third-generation effigy of the Queen, designed in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1988 1/4 oz Platinum Koala Coin uses the first design in what became an annually changing series. The artwork depicts a seated koala in front-facing relief against a smooth background. The inscriptions include the series title, the year, and the coins weight and purity. This reverse design was created by Michael Tracey.

History

The Platinum Koala Series was brought to an end after 2000 due to decreasing demand for platinum bullion around the world. Over the years, the series expanded to include additional options. A 1/20 oz platinum coin was introduced beginning in 1991. In 1992, the Perth Mint added larger versions as well, including 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilogram coins.
