Obverse

The obverse side of the 1989 Austrian Philharmonic Coin showcases the famous pipe organ that has become an iconic symbol for audiences worldwide. The organ is from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1989 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coin, you’ll find four violins positioned on either side of a cello, which is in the foreground. A Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp are arranged behind the instruments.

History

The design of the coin that pays tribute to the musical legacy of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was created by Thomas Pesendorfer, the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint. The Orchestra has always been associated with the best composers and instrumental virtuosos in European classical music since its founding. Its music is of such a high standard that Richard Strauss once remarked, “All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement.” The coin has earned a reputation as a highly stable gold investment and has become one of the most consistently popular and stable ways to invest in gold. Total sales have reached tens of millions and include hundreds of tons of precious metal.
