Obverse

The obverse of this coin features Paul Kruger, a former South African president, facing to the left. This portrait was crafted by Otto Schultz and is surrounded by the words SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA, reflecting the countrys dual-language heritage at the time the Krugerrand series was born.

Reverse

Flipping the coin reveals the springbok antelope, an image sculpted by Coert Steynberg. The animal is shown leaping gracefully across the land, and its smooth, curved horns and lively motion reflect the beauty of South Africas native wildlife.

History

By the 1980s, Krugerrands were widely known and held a huge share of the global gold coin market. Even though South Africa faced international sanctions, the coins popularity stayed strong.
