In 1997, the United States Mint released its first platinum bullion coin. Known as the American Platinum Eagle, this was the only American Eagle coin to feature contemporary designs of Lady Liberty and the bald eagle instead of the historical artwork used on other coins. Each 1997 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin arrives in a protective plastic flip. This release marks the start of the Platinum Eagle program, with the 1997 coin holding the third-highest mintage in the series after the 1998 and 1999 coins.

Obverse

The obverse side of the coin shows the Statue of Libertys face as crafted by Mercanti. It stands as the only modern design in the American Eagle bullion lineup, with other metal versions using classic imagery from earlier U.S. coin history.

Reverse

On the reverse, the coin features Thomas D. Rogers design of a bald eagle soaring across the sky with the sun rising behind it. This image was the sole reverse used on both the BU and Proof coins in the years 1997 and 2017.

History

The obverse artwork from John Mercanti portrays Lady Liberty in a neoclassical style, inspired by the Statue of Liberty. With her crown of stars and flowing hair, the image represents both American strength and heritage. This design has been central to the Platinum Eagle series since its debut.
