The Proof American Platinum Eagle Series is one of the more distinctive programs in the American bullion lineup. First released in 1997, the series featured a new reverse design each year through 2017 and a new obverse design each year through 2025. Obverse

The obverse of each 1999 Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin shows the face of Lady Liberty, taken from the Statue of Liberty. This image was created in 1997 by John Mercanti, who served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Reverse

On the reverse of each coin, youll see an American bald eagle soaring above a southern wetland, with an alligator shown below. This design was created by Al Maletsky and was one of four reverse designs he produced between 1999 and 2003 for the US Mint.

History

From 1998 through 2002, the United States Mint produced the Vistas of Liberty designs for the Proof Platinum Eagle coins. Each year highlighted the bald eagle over a different American landscape. The 1999 design focused on the swamplands of the Southeast.
