Product Description

In the years from 1991 to 2009, the Perth Mint broadened its Australian Gold Kangaroo lineup by introducing several larger coin weights. Originally launched in 1986 with 1 oz and fractional sizes, the series welcomed 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo coins in 1991. The 2 oz and 10 oz options were eventually discontinued in 2009. BGASC is proud to offer the 2000 10 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 10th release of 10 oz Gold Kangaroo Coins!
  • Limited mintage of only 260 coins!
  • Contains 10 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of $1,000 (AUD) backed by the Australian government.
  • The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • On the reverse is an iconic depiction of the red kangaroo.

Each coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip. The Perth Mint did not cap production for the 2000 10 oz coin, choosing instead to strike coins as needed to meet demand. Just 260 coins were sold that year, making it the fourth lowest mintage in the history of the 10 oz Gold Kangaroo series.

Obverse

The obverse displays Queen Elizabeth II in a right-profile portrait. She is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This likeness was created by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 and featured on Australian coins for two decades.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the red kangaroo stands out as a symbol of Australias wildlife. Known scientifically as Osphranter rufus, its the largest living marsupial on Earth. Males can grow up to 6 feet tall and weigh over 200 pounds. Their strong legs and tails help with balance, while their reddish coats are the source of their name.

History

The coins reverse features the red kangaroo in a leaping pose, a familiar image that draws inspiration from early 20th-century Australian coinage. This specific design was first used on the reverse of the copper penny in 1938 and remained there until 1964. It was created by George Kruger Gray, a notable designer of coins and medals from the United Kingdom.
