Product Description

In 2001, the United States Mint released a commemorative silver dollar set featuring the classic Buffalo Nickel design by James Earle Fraser. Originally found on 5-cent pieces from the early 20th century, Frasers work was adapted to a silver dollar format for this special release. It was the first time these well-known images appeared on US silver dollars. Now, BGASC is offering 2001 $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Buffalo 2-Coin Sets for collectors and silver buyers alike.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in capsules with a US Mint presentation box and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Commemorative issue of the Buffalo Nickel design!
  • Set includes two silver dollars!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content per coin (1.546 Troy oz total).
  • Bears individual face values of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • The obverse features Frasers bust of an indigenous figure.
  • On the reverse is Black Diamond, an American bison.
  • Original artwork by James Earle Fraser.
  • Set includes one BU coin and one Proof coin.

Each 2-coin set comes with one Brilliant Uncirculated and one Proof version of the 2001 Silver Buffalo Dollar. These silver dollars are placed in individual capsules and housed in an official US Mint display box. Each set also includes a Certificate of Authenticity. The coins are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, with each piece containing .7734 Troy oz of silver.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2001 Silver Buffalo Dollar is a portrait of a Native American man. This image wasnt modeled after one person, but rather a blend of characteristics from several Native American leaders Fraser met during his life, including Two Moons, Big Tree, and Iron Tail. Its a design that honors heritage and tradition.

Reverse

The reverse shows a large American bison. This animal, named Black Diamond, once lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City and served as the model for Frasers artwork. The design recalls the bison that once roamed the Great Plains and remains one of the most memorable images in US coinage.

History

Frasers Buffalo Nickel was introduced in 1913 and remained in production until 1938. The US Mint commissioned Fraser, a well-known American sculptor, to design the coin in a way that reflected the spirit of the American frontier and its people. His work remains a favorite among collectors for its historical significance and strong visuals.
