Each 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin is available in a protective plastic flip. The mintage for the 1 oz Gold Eagle in 2005 represented a modest volume given the average for the period of 2000-2007. It wasn’t until the onset of the Great Recession in 2008 that the fortunes of the 1 oz Gold Eagle would change.

The obverse face of the 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin features the image of Lady Liberty. This iconic and historic design was handcrafted by Augustus Saint Gaudens whose design was originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle. She is depicted in a flowing gown wielding a torch and an olive branch.

The reverse face of the 2005 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin features the iconic design from Miley Busiek. This is the bald Eagle family which has graced the reverse face of this series for a long time. It depicts a male eagle soaring high over his family as the female counterpart watches from the safety of her nest along with her hatchlings.

Prior to the Great Recession, the high point of production for 1 oz Gold Eagles in the 2000s came between 2003 and 2005. The global economic tremors felt after the terror attacks of 9/11 and the ensuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq pushed more investors to safe-haven metals. However, as the decade wore on, economic outlooks improved briefly and demand for Gold Eagles dropped significantly in 2006 and 2007.
