The series began with Gold and Silver Eagles, and to celebrate this milestone, the Mint introduced a special 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle. Obverse

On the obverse of the 2006-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle, you’ll see the famous design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This artwork first appeared on the $20 Double Eagle in 1907 and features a full-length view of Liberty walking forward with a torch and olive branch. Sun rays, stars, and the US Capitol fill in the background.

Reverse

The reverse includes the design created by Miley Busiek for this series in 1986. It features a nest of bald eagles, with a male flying above as a female watches over their young. This image is unique to the Gold Eagle and represents strength and family values.

History

When the American Gold Eagle debuted in 1986, it came in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. A Proof Gold Eagle was also available that year, but only in the 1 oz size. Additional sizes for the Proof version were added in later yearsfirst the 1/2 oz in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz in 1988.
