Obverse
The obverse design of the 2008-W 1/10 oz Proof Gold Buffalo shows a right-facing portrait of a Native American. The artwork is based on the combined features of three real Native American chiefs: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
Reverse
On the coins reverse side, youll see a large American bison standing on a patch of land. This figure is modeled after Black Diamond, a bison once exhibited at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
History
These designs were originally created by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, first released in 1913. The artwork reflected Americas early frontier days and was well known for its detail and realism. The Buffalo Nickel remained in circulation until 1938, when it was replaced by the Jefferson Nickel. Fractional-ounce Gold Buffalo Coins were only made in 2008 and offered in three sizes: 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.
