The American Gold Buffalo first appeared in 2006 as a major milestone for the United States Mint. It was the mints first bullion coin struck in 24-karat gold and issued each year, while also bringing back James Earle Frasers classic designs from the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. In 2008, the series did something it has never repeated by releasing fractional-ounce versions alongside the standard 1 oz coin. Each 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Gold Buffalo Set includes four proof coins, with each one sealed in its own slab for protection. These coins are graded PF69, which means they retain full proof quality and original mint surfaces with only a small number of very minor flaws. Any hairlines or contact marks are tiny, limited in number, and located away from the main focal points. With the UCAM designation, collectors can also expect strong contrast between frosted devices and clean, mirrored fields. This set contains a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz Gold Buffalo Coin.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2008-W Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins is Frasers detailed portrait of an indigenous figure. The profile is believed to be a blend of features from three actual indigenous leaders from the early 20th century, resulting in a design that feels realistic and distinct.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2008-W Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins features Black Diamond, the bison linked to the original Buffalo Nickel artwork. The animal is shown in left-profile relief and stands on a small mound of dirt, creating a balanced design with a natural, steady pose.

History

The Buffalo Nickel, officially titled the Indian Head nickel, debuted in 1913 and quickly became one of the most recognizable designs in US history. Sculptor James Earle Fraser moved away from the ornate look of earlier coinage and chose distinctly American subjects instead. The obverse shows a composite portrait inspired by three Native American chiefs, while the reverse features an American bison often said to be modeled after Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo in New York. The coins look and theme reflected the nations growing desire to celebrate American identity and the rugged frontier story.
