Obverse
The 2010 American Gold Buffalo Coin proudly displays the image of an indigenous tribal figure on its obverse side. This portrayal captures the stoic expression of the man in right-profile relief, adding to the coin’s allure.
Reverse
On the reverse side the 2010 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin, Fraser’s depiction of the American bison symbolizes the continent’s indigenous tribes and their deep connection to this majestic beast, the largest land mammal in North America.
History
The design of the Buffalo Nickel broke away from the conventional portrayal of historical figures on previous coins. Instead, the obverse side depicted the profile of a Native American chief. Designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913, this artwork aimed to celebrate the rich heritage of Native Americans and the majestic wildlife of the American West. The coin remained in circulation until 1938 when it was replaced by the modern Jefferson Nickel series.
