The Silver Kookaburra Series from the Perth Mint began in 1990 and quickly became one of the first bullion coin programs to focus on a native Australian animal. Over the years, the series has built a strong reputation among collectors thanks to its changing yearly designs, dependable minting quality, and its spotlight on the famous kookaburra bird. Today, the 2013 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin can be found online at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a protective plastic capsule!
  • 24th release of Silver Kookaburras!
  • Total mintage of 41,911 coins!
  • Contains 1 kilo (32.15 troy oz) of .999 pure silver.
  • Issued a face value of $30 (AUD) by Australia.
  • Obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse depicts two kookaburras on a gum tree branch.
  • Designed by Natasha Muhl.
  • Bears a P mint mark from the Perth Mint.

The 2013 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is the largest weight offered in that years collection and is packaged in a protective plastic capsule. For the 2013 release, the Perth Mint struck Kookaburra coins in 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sizes. The 1 oz coin sold out its maximum mintage of 500,000 coins, while the larger coins did not have fixed mintages during the year. When the sales period ended, the 10 oz version had sold 24,481 coins and the 1 kilo version finished with a total of 41,911 coins.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 2013 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin displays the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. His effigy presents the Queen in right-profile wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Diamond Tiara. This portrait was used on Australian coinage from 1999 through 2018 and became one of the longest-running designs used in the Kookaburra series.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2013 1 Kilo Silver Kookaburra Coin is a design from Natasha Muhl that features two young kookaburras resting on a branch of a gum tree. Behind them, Australian bush flowers add detail to the scene. The image is distinctive within the series because it shows a pair of juvenile birds, while many other Kookaburra designs feature a single bird.

History

In First Nations cultures, the kookaburra is recognized as a meaningful totem animal and often represents a messenger with spiritual importance. For the communities who hold it sacred, the birds presence can symbolize guidance and connection. More generally, the kookaburra is well known for its laughter-like call and is often associated with joy, good spirits, and positive fortune.
