The Mexican Mint began striking Proof Gold Libertads in the 1980s, but it wasnt until 2004 that these coins became part of a consistent annual series. That year marked the introduction of all five fractional sizes, which have been released each year since, with the exception of 2012. BGASC now offers the 2018 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin.

Each 2018 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is individually housed in a protective plastic capsule. These coins feature frosted designs and reflective proof fields. In 2018, only 1,000 of the 1/4 oz coins were produced, matching the mintage numbers for the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/20 oz versions. The 1/10 oz coin had the highest production with 1,500 units struck.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2018 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad features the official coat of arms for Mexico. It shows a golden eagle with its wings extended as it grips a snake using its beak and talon. The eagle stands on a cactus branch, reflecting a scene tied to the countrys founding legend.

Reverse

On the reverse of the coin is the image of Winged Victory, the statue that stands at the top of the Victory Column in Mexico City. This design is based on Nike, the ancient symbol of victory, and shows a winged female figure holding a wreath and broken chains.

History

The 1/4 oz size was added to the Proof Gold Libertad lineup in 2004. Earlier proof issues included a 1 oz coin in 1983 and a 1/2 oz version in 1989. When the series was revived in 2004, it expanded to include three new weights: 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz, alongside reissues of the previous sizes.
