Obverse

On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin, the Mexican Mint features the country’s official coat of arms. The design shows a Golden eagle with a snake in its beak, perched on a prickly pear cactus. Around the seal is the Spanish-language inscription for the nation of Mexico.

Reverse

The reverse shows the famous Winged Victory statue. This figure stands atop the Independence Victory Column, located in Mexico City. The statue and column were created to celebrate 100 years of Mexican independence.

History

The image of the eagle and snake comes from an Aztec legend. According to the story, the Mexica people were told to build their city where they saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus growing from a rock in a lake. That prophecy led to the creation of Tenochtitlan, now known as Mexico City.
