Obverse

The obverse design on the 2020 Silver Kwang-Tung Dragon Dollar presents an imperial Chinese dragon. This coiled dragon is filled with fine details, including defined scales and sharp claws. In traditional Chinese beliefs, the dragon stands for divine power, strength, and dignity. The design honors the Qing dynastys culture and artistic traditions.

Reverse

For the reverse of the coin, Chinese characters from the 1890 Kwang-Tung Dollar appear. The original coin came from Guangdong province and represents a major step in Chinese coin production during a period of political reform and modernization.

History

The Kwang-Tung Dollar was minted at a time when local mints had growing independence. This change in the minting process mirrored broader challenges and changes in the late stages of Imperial China.
