Obverse
Winged Liberty features on the obverse side of the 2020 Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Palladium Coins. This design was created by Adolph A. Weinman and originally used on the US dime from 1916 to 1945. The design is officially known as Winged Liberty as it depicts Liberty in left-profile relief with a winged Phrygian cap on her head. The coin the design originally featured on was known as the Winged Liberty Dime, but became known colloquially by Americans as the Mercury Dime because Libertys bust appeared similar to images of the Roman messenger god Mercury. Inscriptions include Liberty, In God We Trust, 2020, AW initials for Weinman, and a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is depicted in the reverse field of 2020 Burnished American Eagle Palladium Coins. This design was also created by Weinman, but nearly a decade before Winged Liberty. Weinman created this image of the bald eagle on a cliff edge with a sapling in its talon in 1907 for use on the American Institute of Architects gold medal. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America, $25, E Pluribus Unum, and 1 oz. Pd .9995 Fine.
History
American Eagle Palladium Coins have very limited mintage figures compared to any of the other three versions of the coin. The 2017 BU coin had a cap of 15,000 coins, as did the 2018 Proof. The 2019 Reverse Proof had a mintage cap of 30,000 coins, and all three previous versions have sold out at the US Mint.
