Obverse
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. This right-profile effigy was introduced in 2003 and is notable for its lack of a crown, offering a more understated depiction of the monarch. It remains one of just two Canadian coin portraits designed by a Canadian.
Reverse
On the reverse, a curled Chinese dragon is displayed with its body forming the shape of the number 8. In classic Chinese art, dragons are often paired with a flaming pearl, a symbol of good fortune, enlightenment, or the moon.
History
In ancient times, dragons were believed to control rainfall and waterways, making them especially important to communities that depended on farming. As a result, they were respected as bringers of abundance. This link between dragons and prosperity also made them symbols of strength and imperial authority.
