Australias Antarctic Territory is the largest of its kind, covering almost 5.9 million square kilometers and making up about 42% of the Antarctic continent. The Perth Mint launched a special coin series in the 2020s to celebrate this vast, frozen region and its wildlife. Obverse

On the obverse of the 2022 Blue Whale Silver Coin, youll find Queen Elizabeth II in a right-profile portrait. This design was created by Jody Clark in 2015 and features the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem. It became a standard feature on Australian coins beginning in 2018.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features an adult Blue Whale with its calf. Although these mammals are gigantic, their diet is made up of tiny krill. They filter their food using baleen plates and communicate with one another across great ocean distances through low-frequency sounds that travel far underwater.

History

Australias claim to this part of Antarctica dates back to 1933. Since then, the region has become home to key research facilities like Casey, Davis, and Mawson Stations. These outposts allow scientists to explore many environmental topics, including studies on creatures like the Blue Whale. Blue Whales are the biggest animals known to science, growing as long as 100 feet and weighing around 200 tons. Their hearts are massive, and their arteries are wide enough to allow small children to swim through.
