In 2018, the Perth Mint changed the concept of what makes a legal tender coin when it introduced the Australian Rectangular Dragon Series. These are rectangular-shaped coins made of gold and silver bullion that are shaped like an ingot. Although they look just like gold or silver bars, these coins do carry a face value issued by the Government of Australia.

The obverse of these rectangular coins features the profile of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse also features several stamps, including Elizabeth II, as well as the coins weight, purity, metal content, face value, and mintage year.
Reverse
The reverse of these gold coins features a Chinese Dragon. The dragon is slithering down the coin towards the bottom where there is a flaming pearl. This reverse design is new and highly detailed.
History
The Perth Mint was established on June 20, 1899. The mint is the official bullion mint of Australia and is owned by the Government of Western Australia. The Perth Mint was the last of three branch mints owned by the Royal Mint. The Rectangular Dragon Series gold bullion coin was first issued in 2018.
