The obverse of the 2023 Proof NATB Tennessee Silver Coins portrays the gripping image of Cherokee individuals eluding discovery within a cave. Tsali, sometimes spelled “Tsa-la-gi,” was a renowned Cherokee figure who lived in the North Carolina mountains. His reputation was built on his exceptional hunting and survival skills, finely honed over many years.

History

In October 1838, the U.S. military captured Tsali and his group. Rather than face execution, Tsali made a courageous and selfless decision. He offered to surrender and be executed in exchange for allowing his family and a group of Cherokee to remain in their homeland. His sacrifice saved the lives of some Cherokee and allowed them to avoid forced removal.
