This design is inspired by the actual statue of Winged Liberty, which stands at the center of Mexico City atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. This monument was erected in 1921 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain.

History

The Mexican Mint introduced the Proof Mexican Silver Libertads back in 1983, initially minting only 1 oz silver coins. Annual production didn’t commence until 1986. Over the years, new weight options were added, starting in 1992 with four fractional-ounce coins, followed by 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996, and a 1 Kilo coin in 2008. In 2017, the Mexican Mint added the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz reverse-proof coins to the series.
