Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 British Platinum Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon Coin features the first official portrait of King Charles III. This left-profile relief by Martin Jennings, created in 2022, shows the King without a crown, adhering to the British tradition of changing the monarch’s portrait orientation.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Platinum Tudor Dragon Coins features the Red Dragon of Wales, a symbol adopted by the Tudor dynasty to connect their lineage to Owen Tudor of Wales and the English royal family.

History

In 1536, Henry VIII commissioned these heraldic statues to mark his marriage to Jane Seymour. These beasts were a significant display of Tudor propaganda, showcasing Henry VIII’s royal lineage through both paternal and maternal lines, as well as his connections to previous English monarchs. They served to legitimize his rule and assert his authority.
