The EC8 coin program features silver and gold coins designed to represent the member countries of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). Each year brings new reverse designs for each nation, with this Antigua & Barbuda issue drawing on stories from the sea. Obverse

The obverse side of the coin includes the official seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. The ECCB has operated since 1983 and manages the regions currency, which has remained fixed to the U.S. dollar at EC$2.70 to US$1 for decades.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2024 Colorized EC8 Silver Rum Runner and Kraken Coin showcases a wooden ship navigating calm waters, unaware of the Kraken rising from below. The legend of the Caribbean Kraken evolved over time into a distinct maritime myth, often used to explain the unexplained or to scare off rivals at sea.

Between 1920 and 1933, during the Prohibition era in the United States, the Caribbean became a key location for rum smuggling. Islands such as Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas served as hubs for operations delivering alcohol to the U.S., often under the cover of night.
