Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 EC8 Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner and Kraken Coin features the seal of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. This institution supports eight territories: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Reverse

On the coins reverse, a Kraken is shown rising from the sea, ready to strike a rum runners ship. Stories of the Kraken in the Caribbean blend traditional European sea legends with local folklore. People living on the islands often reported seeing large squid or octopuses, which inspired versions of the Kraken myth unique to this region.

History

The Caribbeans long connection to rum running dates back centuries. In the 1600s, sugar plantations became widespread throughout the region, and rum was created from the byproducts of sugar. With tight regulations and taxes imposed by European powers, smuggling routes were set up to move rum outside of official trade systems.
