The obverse of the 2024 Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin features Robert Scots vision of Liberty. The right-profile portrait shows Liberty with her long hair flowing freely. Scot served as the US Mints first Chief Engraver from 1793 until 1823, and he left a lasting mark on early American coin design with his work on the Flowing Hair Dollar.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Proof Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin revives the original eagle imagery. This side displays a small eagle surrounded by a wreath that gracefully circles it. Additionally, youll find traditional edge lettering on the coin reading HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.

History

The Flowing Hair Dollar, made between 1794 and 1795, is known as the very first official silver dollar minted by the US government. Libertys flowing hair on the obverse reflected freedom and youth, while the reverse depicted a small eagle framed by a delicate wreath. Though the coin was only produced for a short time at the Philadelphia Mint, with about 160,000 coins struck, it played a major part in early US coinage history.
