Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 Australian Gold 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin includes a portrait of King Charles III. Created by Dan Thorne, this uncrowned image of the King is shown in a left-profile pose and marks the first official effigy of the new monarch on Australian coins.
Reverse
The reverse presents an image based on the Spanish Pillar Dollar, one of the most recognized coins in world history. Sometimes called the real de a ocho or piece of eight, it was used around the globe between the 1500s and 1800s. These coins were struck in Spanish territories using silver from the Americas and often showed two pillars, symbolizing the Pillars of Hercules. These classic features are seen again on this anniversary coin.
History
At the time of Governor King’s proclamation, New South Wales lacked a consistent currency. Coins from many countries were in use, each valued differently. The proclamation addressed this issue by giving official values to several foreign coins, helping to bring financial stability to the colony.
