Obverse

On the obverse of the 2025 Congo Silver Velociraptor Coin is the national coat of arms of the Congo. The design includes a leopards head at the center, symbolizing strength. Behind the shield are a crossed elephant tusk and spear, representing the countrys resources and its defense.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2025 1 oz Silver Velociraptor Coin features the image of a Velociraptor. Though often depicted as large in popular media, real Velociraptors were relatively small. They stood about 18 inches tall and measured around six feet long. Their bodies were designed for speed, with lightweight bones aiding movement. A standout feature is the curved claw on each foot, which could grow up to 2.6 inches and was likely used to control prey.

History

Velociraptors lived during the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 75 to 71 million years ago, in parts of Central and East Asia. These animals are commonly thought to have been quick and efficient predators. Some scientists suggest they may have had warm-blooded characteristics, allowing for sustained activity. The idea that they hunted in groups is still debated. Their curved claws were likely used to latch onto prey, similar to how birds of prey use their talons today.
