This thoughtful design combines the poppy, a symbol of remembrance, with the comforting presence of the angel and the figure of a soldier in uniform.

History

At the center of the coins artwork is the Angel of Mons. This figure is drawn from a famous legend about a supernatural presence said to have appeared to British soldiers withdrawing from Mons, Belgium, in August 1914. In the most widely known versions, ghostly archers from the Battle of Agincourt or angelic figures are seen in the sky, helping protect the British Expeditionary Force from advancing German troops.
