On May 7, 2025, following the passing of Pope Francis, the Roman Catholic Church held a Conclave to appoint a new Pope. Just over a day later, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen to become the 267th Pope. In honor of this significant event, a commemorative silver round was issued to celebrate his selection as Pope Leo XIV. The 2025 1 oz Pope Leo XIV Commemorative Silver Rounds are offered in plastic flips for safe handling. These rounds honor the elevation of Cardinal Prevost to Pope, where he chose the name Pope Leo XIV as his official title.

Obverse

The obverse of the round includes a detailed effigy of Pope Leo XIV. Surrounding the portrait are inscriptions of his chosen papal name and the date of his election. His background includes studies at Villanova University and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, as well as a lifetime of pastoral work in multicultural settings that support his well-rounded leadership in the Church.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the design features the Vatican. As an independent city-state established in 1929, Vatican City lies within Rome and is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It is home to iconic structures like St. Peters Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

History

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is an American-born member of the Order of Saint Augustine with deep experience in both the Western Hemisphere and the Vatican. In 2023, he was appointed by Pope Francis as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and named a Cardinal in the same year. Prior to his work in Rome, he spent over a decade as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and previously served as the Orders Prior General.
